*My son came into this world in a wonderful atmosphere that was created in large part by Hypnobirthing.  My first birth was also a natural birth but it was a very painful experience. So much so that I heavily debated having any more children naturally. When it came time to have my second child all I could think about was the pain of my first labor. A few friends suggested Hypnobirthing and I started looking into it. I decided that it was worth the money and looked at it as an investment for all of my future children's births. Sarah came to my home and taught my husband and I all of the classes. It was such a wonderful experience. Sarah was gracious and knowledgeable. She assured me that I could have a natural childbirth that I would look back on with fond memories. After reading the Hypnobirthing book and meeting with Sarah I no longer feared my child's birth, instead I looked forward to it with joy and anticipation. I felt so comfortable with Sarah that I asked her to be at my son's birth; I was so grateful she came. She helped me relax and reminded me of all the Hypnobirthing techniques that I had been practicing during my pregnancy. The birth of my son wasn't exactly pain free or perfect but there was a night and day difference between this birth and my first child's birth. I do not look back with the dread I did with the first birth.

My husband and I are incredibly grateful that we were given the opportunity to have a natural birth for our first son, Ian.  I was induced at 41 weeks and 3 days.  However,  despite the intense contractions (I say contractions instead of surges because my body was influenced by induction medication), I was able to work through them with hypnobirthing relaxation techniques.  The birth was beautiful - only 5 and a half hours long. As personal as it is, my perineum remained intact after delivering a good size baby of 8 lbs 11 ounces. My husband was an amazing companion and supportive throughout the entire experience. Having an alert and happy newborn was a great beginning to parenthood.  To all expecting mothers and fathers - please have no fear.  Pregnancy and Birth is beautiful.  JUST BREATHE

Thank You Sarah!!!

Unfortunately, even though my husband and I had completed more than half of the HypnoBirthing classes, the birth of our son came before the completion of our classes. We were really enjoying the classes and I was practicing my scripts every night before bed.
I went to the hospital to be treated with IV fluids for food poisoning. They put a monitor on our son and found his heart rate was dropping from 140 to 50bpm. It was decided by a high risk OB that the best course of action would be an emergency C section. 30 minutes later, we were holding Kellan. They didn't induce labor to reduce any risk of additional stress on his little body. Even though I was not able to use the HypnoBirthing techniques to deal with surges, I did use the techniques to try to relax before and during this unexpected C-section. I also think practicing the scripts every night really helped me be more relaxed during the final months of my pregnancy.
I was disappointed that I did not have the natural, HypnoBirth experience I hoped for, but what is most important is that Kellan is healthy and safe. Maybe I will try for a VBAC next time and be able to put my HynoBirthing skills to use!
Thanks Sarah :-)

What is HypnoBirthing:
HypnoBirthing® - The Mongan Method - is a unique method of relaxed, natural childbirth education, enhanced by self-hypnosis techniques. HypnoBirthing® provides the missing link that allows women to use their natural instincts to bring about a safer, easier, more comfortable birthing. Emphasis is placed on pregnancy and childbirth, as well as on pre-birth parenting and the consciousness of the pre-born baby. As a birthing method, HypnoBirthing® is as new as tomorrow and as old as ancient times.
HypnoBirthing® works when women learn:
· Relaxation techniques to eliminate the fear and tension that cause long labor and pain
· Once fear is eliminated replace it immediately with confidence that she can have a birth that is amazing, calm, serene and joyful
· To replace the myth that severe pain must accompany normal birthing, with the idea that birth should and can be a calm and peaceful process
· How the mother's body is designed to work in neuro-muscular harmony with nature throughout labor
· How to use deep relaxation during and between uterine surges to minimize pain and discomfort
· Powerful visualizations and techniques to bring about an easier birth
· The importance of prenatal and perinatal bonding.
HypnoBirthing® Mothers are making choices -- creating change!
In 2007 15.5% of US HypnoBirthing® mothers birthed via C-Section, compared to the national average of 32%
12% of HypnoBirthing® mothers chose to birth in the comfort of their homes. The national average is less than 1%.
6% of HypnoBirthing® mothers chose to birth in freestanding birth centers. The national average is less than 1%.
Over 70% of HypnoBirthing® mothers birthing vaginally had unmedicated births.
