BIRTH DOULA

WHAT IS A BIRTH DOULA?

A Birth Doula is a professional who provides continous support, both physically and emotionally to the laboring woman (and in many cases her partner). The birth doula also offers prenatal and post-partum support.

Birth doula's do not take the place of the husband, partner, midwife, nurses or doctors, but rather work with all birth attendents in accordance with the mother's birth vision to have the most optimal labor and birthing experience she can.

Many people may be confused as to the difference between a Midwife and Birth Doula. It is important to know that, like a midwife, birth doula's do believe that birth is a normal and natural process that works best if left alone. However birth doula's do not give out medical advise or perform any medical tasks, as a midwife does. A Birth Doula is not a medical professional.  Birth doula's can however, offer evidence-based information that can help you make informed decisions about your maternity care during pregnancy, labor, and your birthing experience.
